Best Beaches Near Nidri, Lefkada: Where to Swim on the East Coast

Nidri is the busiest resort on Lefkada’s east coast, and for good reason. It faces a sheltered stretch of the Ionian Sea dotted with small green islands, its harbour is the starting point for countless boat trips, and the water here is usually calm while the famous west-coast beaches are being pounded by waves. If you’re staying in or near Nidri, you don’t need to drive across the island every day to enjoy a great swim. Some lovely, easy-going beaches are only minutes away.

Here’s our guide to the best beaches near Nidri, what each one is like, and a few ideas for days when you fancy something a little different.

East coast vs west coast: what to expect

Lefkada’s west coast is where you’ll find the dramatic, cliff-backed beaches like Porto Katsiki and Egremni, with dazzling blue water but also wind, waves and long drives. The east coast around Nidri is a different world. Bays are sheltered, the sea is generally flat and warm, and beaches tend to be pebbly or a mix of pebbles and coarse sand, framed by olive groves and pine-covered hills. It’s ideal for families with young children, relaxed swimmers, snorkellers and anyone who prefers a short hop to the beach and a long lunch at a taverna.

1. Nidri Beach

The simplest option is right on your doorstep. Nidri’s own beach runs along the northern side of the village and is a mix of coarse sand and pebbles. The sea is shallow and warm, which is why it’s popular with families with small children. You’ll find sunbeds and umbrellas, beach bars and tavernas, and plenty of watersports and boat hire nearby.

The real treat is the view: the little islands of Madouri, Sparti, Skorpios and Heloni sit just offshore, so even a quick morning swim comes with a postcard backdrop. It’s not the quietest beach on the island in July and August, but for convenience it’s hard to beat.

2. Perigiali

Just north of Nidri, less than a kilometre away, Perigiali offers a calmer alternative. Expect a narrow, natural strip of pebbles framed by greenery and large rocks that provide some welcome natural shade. The water is clear and usually almost wave-free, and the rocky seabed makes it a good spot for snorkelling.

Perigiali is mostly unorganised, so bring your own umbrella, water and snacks. Shops and cafés are only a short walk back towards the road.

3. Desimi Beach

A short drive south of Nidri, past the bay of Vlicho, Desimi sits on the eastern side of the Geni peninsula. It’s a long, narrow beach of sand and pebbles in a shallow, sheltered bay with lovely emerald-tinted water. Olive groves come almost down to the shore, and there’s free parking among the trees.

Desimi has a relaxed, outdoorsy feel. There are campsites by the beach and a couple of tavernas, and you can hire boats, pedalos or kayaks to explore the coastline and its small caves. It does get busy in high season, so arrive early if you want a good spot in the shade.

4. Mikros Gialos (Poros)

Further south, about 11 km from Nidri, Mikros Gialos is one of the prettiest bays on this side of the island. Also known as Poros beach or Rouda Bay, it lies below the village of Poros and is reached by a winding road of about 4 km down from the main road. The effort pays off: a long, sheltered bay with calm water, surrounded by forested hills.

The beach is shingle and pebbles, so water shoes are a good idea. It’s well organised, with sunbeds and umbrellas, tavernas, bars and a small supermarket nearby, plus kayaks and pedal boats for hire. It’s an excellent choice for a full beach day with lunch included.

5. Further afield: the south coast

If you have a car and want to explore, the south of the island is within reach for a day trip. Near Vasiliki, Agiofili is a small, beautiful bay of white pebbles and turquoise water that deepens quickly and is great for snorkelling. It can be reached by road and steps, or by boat from Vasiliki. Off the beaten track, Ammouso is a pebbly beach in a rocky setting, reached via a long, narrow minor road, with a simple beach bar and taverna.

Beaches you reach by boat

One of the best things about staying in Nidri is how easy it is to get out on the water. Motorboats and sailboats can be rented in Nidri, and in good weather they can reach the nearby islands of Skorpios, Madouri and Meganisi, as well as hidden coves along the Lefkada coast that are hard to reach by road. Organised day cruises also leave from the harbour and typically combine swim stops at secluded bays with visits to island villages.

If you rent your own boat, check the weather forecast and the rental company’s rules on where you’re allowed to go, and always bring plenty of water and sun protection.

A cool break: the Dimosari waterfalls

When you need a break from the sun, head inland. The Dimosari waterfalls lie about 3 km west of Nidri, at the end of a gentle footpath of around 20 minutes through shady greenery. The water collects in a small natural pool where brave swimmers can take a very cold dip. The flow is strongest earlier in the year and naturally weaker in late summer, so manage your expectations in August. Early morning or late afternoon is the best time to go if you want to avoid the crowds.

Practical tips for beach days near Nidri

  • Pack water shoes: most east-coast beaches are pebbly, and water shoes make getting in and out much more comfortable.
  • Go early in peak season: July and August are busy, and the best shady spots and parking fill up by late morning.
  • Bring your own kit to unorganised beaches: an umbrella, snorkel and cool box turn a quiet beach like Perigiali into a perfect day out.
  • Use the calm days wisely: when the wind is up on the west coast, the east coast is usually calm, so it’s the ideal plan B.
  • Combine beach and lunch: beaches like Mikros Gialos and Desimi have tavernas right by the sand, so you can make a day of it.
  • Respect the environment: take your rubbish with you and leave the natural shade, rocks and plants as you found them.

Which Nidri beach is right for you?

  • Families with young children: Nidri Beach for shallow water and facilities, or Desimi for a sheltered bay.
  • Snorkellers: Perigiali for clear water and rocks, or Agiofili if you’re heading south.
  • A full, comfortable beach day: Mikros Gialos, with sunbeds, tavernas and kayaks.
  • Something different: a boat day to the islands, or a walk to the Dimosari waterfalls.
